February Highlights

Many thanks to the businesses, community organizations and neighbors who hosted Cyclovia on this ‘Bungalow Roll’ route once again this year (remixed).

Roll + Repaint
While we couldn’t block off the streets this time, Cyclovia Remix brought folks together to ride bikes in safer, larger numbers. Riders of all ages gathered to tour the Bungalow Roll from two different parts of the city on February 19th. West-siders from Armory Park met up with mid-towners taking off from Himmel Park at our pop-up party and mural-painting volunteer day!

What’s new on the Sunshine Mile?

Cyclovia joined up with Sunshine Mile Business Association for a mural-painting party with music, free bike repair, live screen printing, games, local food and giveaways after our family-friendly bike ride. Artist Porter McDonald designed the route’s newest mural on the South wall of Arte de la Vide on Broadway at Tucson. Blvd. We love the depiction of the Sunshine Mile’s recent historic preservation effort…bungalows carried on the backs of javelina!

Tanline Printing provided Cyclovia swag—screen printed live from their super cool solar powered fire truck.

Local businesses Cero Tucson & Hairmosa Salon kept us looking good with giveaways; while Bisbee Breakfast Club kept us fed over hours in the sun painting.

To get more insight on what to expect from the redeveloped Sunshine Mile and the process, we interviewed the President of the Sunshine Mile Business Association, Andy Littleton. Check out the interview here.

Remix + a Throwback
Each month, Cyclovia Remix brings you a limited-edition sticker specific to our revisited route. For February, we threw it back to a Classic Cyclovia design from Fezlab — with a special twist for the Bungalow Roll route. Participants collected this sticker for the FIFTH of six that grant access to the VIP Lounge at Cyclovia on March 27th.

Trial & Error Got us Movin’

Members of the Tucson-founded Trial & Error Collective brought us the perfect playlist for moving through Tucson streets. For their Cyclovia mix, T&E created a playlist of TRANSPORTATION SONGS! The playlist moves in themes of biking, walking/running, buses, trains, subways, skating, planes, and general songs of rides, highways and more.

Trial and Error (T&E) is a collective dedicated to sharing their love for music. The collective consists of writers and artists across the country that publish music articles, podcasts, artist interviews, concert photography, as well as a seasonal DIY zine.

Cyclovia wouldn’t be possible without the collaboration of so many supporting organizations, partners and volunteers. We’re so grateful for each of their unique contributions!

While we met up together on during the month of February, neighbors, businesses, and community organizations contribute to the area’s resilience, creativity, culture, and social fabric all year round. Cyclovia seeks to celebrate the good that happens (and can happen) in these public spaces, but acknowledges that many neighborhoods lack the security and support from City infrastructure to have truly open streets. Wider progress happens by connecting with the people who have already created a sense of place, establishing trust and mutual exchange, and building equitable spaces for stories and decisions to be made by those historically left out of decision-making processes for the built-environment.
